Traditional braces are the age-old way to straighten teeth and have been used for decades. At Lane Cove Orthodontics, they remain one of our preferred treatment methods.
How do traditional braces straighten teeth?
To move into a straighter position, our teeth need gentle force applied to them. This is how traditional metal braces work. Using a system of brackets (which are attached to the surface of your teeth) and archwires (which connect the brackets), this system uses small elastic bands (also known as ligatures) to apply pressure.
Each time you come and see us for an consultation (approximately every six to eight weeks), our orthodontist will tighten the archwire to encourage your teeth to move just a little bit more towards their desired position.
Benefits of traditional metal braces
The greatest benefit of traditional metal braces is that this treatment option can fix any orthodontic problem, whether major or minor. The system of brackets and archwires can be applied to all orthodontic cases, from over and under bites to a slightly crooked tooth.
It's also a tried and tested method of orthodontic treatment which works on patients of all ages. For children and young adults, an added benefit of traditional metal braces is that they can be jazzed up with different coloured elastic bands, making orthodontic treatment fun.
